What we’re doing?

Since the beginning of the year, the majority of our kids at Kohatu Child Care have been learning about the differences between the Pacific Islands and the ocean currents in each island.  For example, they were learning about how the stars sit differently in the sky in each Island.  They also learning the different water temperatures and wind-currents.

Why are we doing this?

Our kids are very keen navigators.   We have traditional Waka Hourua.  We’re restoring one at the moment and our kids have been on the one in Auckland.

We have also made visits to Maritime Museum in Auckland and Te Aurere to learn more about Celestial navigation.

Some interesting things we’re learning

  • Moana is a Way-finder on a Waka Hourua.
  • The Star Compass at Te Aurere
  • Various star constellations

Exciting things coming up!

In November, Kohatu are sending four of our tamariki to attend Hawaiki voyaging in Tauranga.
